Determining the current state of development is a first step toward needs-based support for the establishment and expansion of national quality infrastructure (QI). The quality infrastructure system of each country requires continued further development in order to meet the needs of industry. However, needs and potential can vary from country to country. Each QI system of our partner countries is in a different stage of development, each has individual strengths, and each is confronted with different challenges.

Within the scope of the “Alliance for Product Quality”, we aim to determine the status quo of QI in all our partner countries. To do this, we use an instrument that was developed by PTB and the World Bank: “Ensuring Quality to Gain Access to Global Markets: A Reform Toolkit“.

The results of data collection serve as the basis for identifying further intervention areas. The aim is to strengthen national quality infrastructure and improve the private sector’s access to quality-assuring services such as certifications and product tests.

The report from Rwanda is a good example of this. In 2020, data collection was conducted and published. One of the results and, thus, recommendations for action was to address Rwanda’s accreditation system. At present, potential support measures are being explored and discussed with partners in Rwanda and the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).
